Although I have not been fully intentional about this, I have managed to stay away from zippers up until now. That was the case until I got a fancy new bag in the mail yesterday that was crying for a zipper pouch. I bought a new purse from another Etsy seller (sorry, I’m keeping secrets until I have a picture I can show you of this bag). I needed something larger than my old purse…not to mention that I was a little embarrassed in business meetings when the threads were coming off of my old purse because it was falling apart! However, with the extra size of this bag comes the need for some other storage components so I can find everything without five minutes of rummaging. So I decided to take a break from all of my other projects to make myself a zipper pouch (a decision I may regret Sunday night when I’m trying to finish a big order in time to be mailed out Monday!)
First off, let me appologize for the poor photo quality. I took that one with my cell phone. Second, I would like to give credit where credit is due. I used this tutorial from “Splityarn,” a great blog showcasing handmade knit and sewn goods. Third, I just want to encourage those of you who are hiding from zippers to come out from behind your rock, grab a few scraps and a pretty zipper, and give this a try! It is not the kind of project you will finish in five minutes, but if you dedicate an hour or so to reading/talking yourself through the handy tutorial, you can have a fancy zipper pouch too. Oh, and if it is a little shabby, don’t be too discouraged. There is one spot on mine where the lining fabric came apart from the zipper when I was flipping everything right side out! I need a little more practice, but at least now I know that I can sew a simple zipper and it won’t cost me my sanity!
